Claire Grauer (EN)

Dr. Claire Grauer

I am a postdoctoral researcher, and in my position as a research coordinator, I am responsible for coordinating project proposals, establishing networks for future collaborations and research projects, and supporting our project staff. I also teach at undergraduate and graduate levels in our Sachunterricht courses.

In my research and teaching, I am interested in how to create transformative teaching and learning formats to promote needs-based Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE). In my dissertation in sustainability sciences, I investigated how time use can be conceptualized and approached as a form of needs fulfillment in the context of ESE in school education.

My current focus is on linking global learning and critical global citizenship education (CGCE) to Sachunterricht and on integrating postcolonial perspectives into school-based ESE via teacher training. Another research interest is a cross-culturally comparative understanding of ESE. I work qualitatively, using methods such as action research, ethnography, autoethnography, and narrative interviews.

Before coming to Leuphana, I completed a master’s degree in social anthropology, worked for the German development cooperation in the field of public health, was a freelance education consultant, and completed training in systemic organizational development. I am also the co-founder of paseo GmbH, a Hamburg, Germany-based think-and-do tank promoting innovative approaches to transformative learning in the public and private sectors.
