Strengthening Collaboration on ESD: Visit of Isabel Toman (IAU) to Leuphana University
The UNESCO Chair in Higher Education for Sustainable Development and Sustainability Education and Transdisciplinary Research Institute was pleased to welcome Isabel Toman, Senior Programme Officer for Sustainable Development at the International Association of Universities (IAU), during her visit to Leuphana University Lüneburg.
As an active IAU member, Leuphana collaborates closely with the association, particularly through SDG Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development (HESD) Cluster 4 on Quality Education, where we work together toward advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. IAU is also a part of the UNESCO UNITWIN network on ESD and Social Transformation, led by Leuphana.
During her visit, Isabel met with the UNESCO Chairholder Daniel Fischer and Co-Chairholder Harald Hantke to discuss future collaboration within HESD Cluster 4 and contributions to ongoing initiatives, such as the Global Survey IAU HESD Survey Advisory Group.

Isabel also had an opportunity to meet with Irmhild Brüggen, Leuphana’s Sustainability Officer, to exchange perspectives on advancing sustainability across higher education institutions and fostering deeper cooperation between IAU and Leuphana. Together with Nayama Christy, UNESCO Chair’s Student Representative, the conversation also highlighted the important role of youth engagement in ESD.

Looking ahead, the visit marked an encouraging step toward future joint activities supporting transformative, sustainability-focused learning and research. We look forward to continuing our collaboration!
